FCC Extends Number Portability Rules to Interconnected VoIP

If you need proof that VoIP is becoming mainstream, just look to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The agency issued an order on October 31 stating that LNP (Local Number Portability) rules apply to interconnected VoIP providers just like they do to conventional wireline and wireless telecom carriers. The commission also took steps to make sure that number porting in general goes more smoothly that it has in the past. The combined moves make clear that, from a services standpoint, the FCC sees VoIP as just another phone business.

Microsoft has certainly shone a bright light on Unified Communications, but UC is by no means a new phenomenon introduced by Bill Gates (News - Alert). By combining the features of various communications methods — email, voice mail, fax, IM, telephony — into a single service, unified communications helps users manage all of their communications more effectively, regardless of whether they work in the office, at home, or on the road.
Despite the varied benefits of VOIP IP-based communications systems — from business efficiency to cost savings — many businesses are not quite ready to completely rip out their existing analog systems.
